Rec’n’Read Returns for Summer 2026!

We’re especially excited to share that Rec’n’Read is back!

Rec’n’Read is a 4-week intensive literacy intervention program designed for young children who would benefit from additional reading support over the summer. The program blends structured literacy learning with the fun and social experience of camp. Students need to be able to commit to the full 4-week program.

This program is specifically designed for children aged 6–7 who are emerging or struggling readers, helping to prevent summer learning loss and build a strong foundation for the upcoming school year.

This beloved program previously ran successfully for 18 years, before being paused in 2020 due to COVID-19. We’re thrilled to be bringing it back to support a new group of young learners in our community.

Rec’n’Read is an invitation-only program. Classroom teachers will identify and recommend students who would benefit most. Families cannot register without a teacher referral. The program is offered first to Stoney Creek Community School Students, if there are additional spaces we will reach out to close by elementary schools for referals.

Fees:

  • 2026 Registration Fees: $450 per camper for the full 4-week program
  • Required Camp T-Shirt: $15 each
  • Optional Additional Camp T-Shirts: $15 each

If you require financial support for your child(ren) to register for camp, please contact School Counsellor (or Community School Coordinator for Stoney Creek families) about requesting financial support.

Fun Rec 2026 Updates

2026 Fun Rec Day Camp Update

We are currently planning the 2026 Fun Rec Day Camp season and are looking forward to another exciting summer!

We’re hoping to open registration by late April. Unfortunately, we’re unable to open earlier as we are still waiting to hear back about our grant applications. These grants help us keep camp affordable for families in our community. Please check back here regularly for updates — we will post the official registration date as soon as it’s confirmed.

We are also aiming to offer seven weeks of camp this year and to relaunch Rec & Read, our summer literacy program designed to support students who are working to strengthen their reading skills.

Get Involved: NEBCA Committees

This year, NEBCA will be launching committees to help guide and strengthen different aspects of our work. Committees are open to all community members, and we encourage anyone who wants to make an impact on the direction and growth of NEBCA to get involved.

Current Committees

  • One-on-One Support Committee
Strengthen and oversee the One-on-One Support Program.
  • Rec & Read Committee
Plan and relaunch the Rec & Read literacy enrichment program.
  • Hiring Committee
Lead recruitment and selection for Fun Rec roles and provide hiring recommendations.
  • Great Salmon Send-Off Committee (May 9)
Plan and support the annual Great Salmon Send-Off (May 9) to help build community awareness and support outreach efforts.
  • Community Impact Committee
Review and provide recommendations on how surplus funds can be reinvested to support NEBCA’s mission and benefit the community.
