FunRec Day Camp is seeking a passionate and dedicated qualified teacher to lead our 4-week intensive summer literacy program. This half-day program is intended to help primary learners (mainly grades 1 & 2) achieve age-appropriate reading levels. The Rec’n’Read Leader will guide a small cohort of approximately 16 students through engaging daily literacy activities that support reading development with a Rec n Read Teacher leading the morning reading activities and the Volunteer Coordinator helping lead the campers in the afternoon activities.
FunRec Day Camp is operated by the Northeast Burnaby Community Association (NEBCA), providing affordable summer programs for children out of Stoney Creek Community School in Burnaby, BC. NEBCA is a non-profit, charitable society committed to enhancing the educational, recreational, and environmental well-being of our children and our community.
Expected Work Hours:
- Training Period: June 1 – June 26, 2026
- Approximately 30 hours per week
- Usually during school hours
- Camp Program: June 29 – August 14, 2026
- Approximately 40 hours per week
- Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm
- Location: Stoney Creek Community School, 2740 Beaverbrook Crescent, Burnaby BC, V3J 1J4
Responsibilities:
- Work as part of a team to plan and implement a 7-week summer day camp program.
- Lead, organize, and support Rec’n’Read volunteers, helping them feel confident and engaged in their roles.
- Work with and support the Rec’n’Read Teacher during the morning portion of the program, which may include: running small literacy stations, supervising and leading reading activities, reading with individual students
- Lead and support age-appropriate activities such as: crafts, field trips/out-trips, cooking activities, sports and outdoor play, songs and games, themed adventures, ect
- Participate in staff training, including behaviour management, First Aid, conflict resolution, and program planning.
- Assist with registration and administrative tasks as needed.
- Help prepare supplies and maintain program inventory.
- Supervise children during recreational activities and support positive group behaviour.
- Attend weekly staff meetings to review programming and share ideas.
- Support the integration of children with disabilities into daily camp activities.
- Assist with evaluating the program and providing ideas for future improvements.
Qualifications:
- Must have been enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies during the past academic year and returning to full-time studies in September.
- Experience working with children.
- Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Understanding of child development and age-appropriate activities.
- Comfortable being in and supervising water activities (e.g., splash parks, pools, or water play).
- First Aid certification is an asset or willingness to obtain before the program begins.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check
