Rec n Read Teacher Job Description

FunRec Day Camp is seeking a passionate and dedicated qualified teacher to lead our 4-week intensive summer literacy program. This half-day program is intended to help primary learners (mainly grades 1 & 2) achieve age-appropriate reading levels. The successful candidate will guide a single cohort of approximately 16 students through the 4-week program.

FunRec Day Camp is operated by the Northeast Burnaby Community Association (NEBCA), providing affordable summer programs for children out of Stoney Creek Community School in Burnaby, BC. NEBCA is a non-profit, charitable society committed to enhancing the educational, recreational, and environmental well-being of our children and our community.

Expected Work Hours:

  • 4 days per week (Monday – Thursday) for 4 weeks
  • June 29 – July 23 (no class Wednesday, July 1)
  • Hours: 8:30am-12pm (8:30-9am prep time, 9am-12pm instructional time)
  • Location: Stoney Creek Community School, 2740 Beaverbrook Crescent, Burnaby BC, V3J 1J4
  • Please note: Program preparation time (e.g. material prep, lesson planning, meeting with program participants) before the start of camp will also be required. The timing of this work is to be discussed and agreed upon between the successful candidate and the NEBCA Board (these hours are included in the total compensation).


Responsibilities:

  • Lead Rec’n’Read class in a fun and engaging way
  • Target lessons to bring learners up to grade level for reading
  • Help struggling learners build their confidence through games and activities
  • Plan and teach daily literacy activities using a structured science of reading literacy program (e.g. UFLI, Sounds Right, Sounds to Spelling)
  • Teach phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, sight words, reading fluency, and comprehension
  • Coordinate with program assistants, including youth volunteers
  • Communicate effectively with NEBCA Board and Program Manager
  • Assess and monitor learners’ progress throughout the program
  • Prepare a brief progress report for each learner using a template


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education degree or academic equivalent
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate
  • Practicum reports and/or letter of recommendation from a supervisor or administrator
  • Recent, successful, substantive teaching or practical experience in primary grades and/or literacy enhancement
  • Experience teaching a science of reading-based literacy program
  • Knowledge of a broad range of effective instructional strategies and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs
  • Knowledge of consultative and collaborative strategies to work with NEBCA Board Members and FunRec Project Manager
  • Demonstrated fluency and facility in English (both oral and written)
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check


Remuneration:

From $2800, commensurate with experience
