Join the Northeast Burnaby Community Association (NEBCA) summer team and help create a fun, safe, and engaging camp experience for children in our community. Staff work together to plan and deliver a 7-week summer program serving approximately 70–90 children each week.
The One-on-One Support Leader works closely with a child with increased needs (CIN) who requires additional support to participate successfully in camp activities. This role focuses on providing encouragement, supervision, and behavioural support while helping the camper fully participate in the program alongside their peers.
Expected Work Hours:
- Pre-camp:
- Some time prior to the start of camp may be required to meet with the family of the camper you will be supporting and communicate with their school Education Assistant (EA) or support team. Additional training or preparation time may also be required, depending on the experience of the applicant.
- Camp Program: June 29 – August 14, 2026
- Approximately 40 hours per week
- Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm
- Location: Stoney Creek Community School, 2740 Beaverbrook Crescent, Burnaby BC, V3J 1J4
Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one support to a CIN to help them successfully participate in daily camp activities.
- Support the camper with transitions, social interaction, and participation in group activities.
- Work collaboratively with camp leaders and supervisors to support CIN being included.
- Help adapt activities when needed to ensure the camper can participate safely and successfully.
- Supervise and assist the camper during recreational activities, outdoor play, and field trips.
- Support positive behaviour using strategies learned during staff training and approaches identified by the camper’s family or caregivers.
- Implement and adapt strategies that build on the camper’s strengths, interests, and previously successful supports.
- Utilize resources and behaviour strategies provided to the team before escalating concerns.
- When behaviours are ongoing, communicate with supervisors and seek feedback from families to identify additional strategies that may support the camper’s success.
- Participate in staff training, including behaviour management, First Aid, and conflict resolution.
- Assist the camper during water activities such as splash parks or pools when required.
- Attend weekly staff meetings and participate in program evaluation.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children or youth with diverse needs is strongly preferred.
- Education Assistant (EA) certification or students currently studying to become an EA are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Experience supporting children with behavioural, developmental, or learning differences is an asset.
- Strong patience, empathy, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to adapt and problem-solve by building on a camper’s individual strengths and interests. For example, if a strategy that previously worked is no longer effective, the leader should be able to think creatively and adjust the approach using the camper’s strengths, preferences, and motivations to support success.
- Comfortable being in and supervising water activities (e.g., splash parks, pools, or water play).
- First Aid certification is an asset or willingness to obtain before the program begins.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
